WICHITA, Kan. — People who lived through Saturday night’s tornado that touched down in Wichita, Kan., say it was one of the scariest nights of their lives. Even though there was major destruction, no one died.
Tamara Toombs was hiding in an interior closet with her two and five-year-old kids. She says they heard the tornado roar right over their house.
“We have four big trees, uprooted shingles and our fence is gone,” Toombs said.
About two miles away, fallen power lines blocked the view inside the Oak Lawn Trailer Park, but memories of what happened when the storm hit are still vivid.
Eleven-year-old Christian Gunter and her sister were terrified as they took cover in a shelter.
“There were kids screaming and crying,” Gunter said. “I was trying to calm myself down with my sisters.”
People in and around Wichita are picking up the broken pieces of their businesses and homes. They say they’re thankful that what’s really important is still in tact.
