Friends Say They Miss Lawrence Man, Missing Since Saturday

LAWRENCE, Kan. – 23 year-old Yelekal Alemu, known as “Kal,” has been missing from Lawrence since Saturday.  His friends and family say it’s not like him to not keep in touch, and it’s definitely not in Kal’s nature to blow off important plans.  That has police concerned and looking for clues.

Kal’s roommate and best friend, Senanem Gizaw was quick to call police when Kal’s mother said he’d missed a family reunion Saturday afternoon.

“There was a reason we were friends for a long time, so I don’t know.  Just a good guy.”

Senanem says Kal wouldn’t have missed seeing his family.  Lawrence police say they hear the same thing from everyone who knew him.

“He was very much in touch with friends and family, very reliable, and so they immediately became concerned,” Trent McKinley from the Lawrence Police Department said.

Kan. Republicans Continue Redistricting Debate

TOPEKA, Kan. — You might think in such a heavily republican state, Kansas would have no problem with redistricting. But right now, Kansas is one of the last states in the country still debating the maps.

And it turns out the biggest fight is between Republicans.

The fight has been going on so long now that the Kansas Secretary of State has had to push back election filing dates and the whole thing could derail the state’s August 7 primary elections if it’s not resolved soon.

Lawmakers have to redraw political maps after the census to adjust for population changes. Traditionally, the Kansas Senate and House redraws their own maps and each body approves the others without a squabble. But this year the Kansas House, controlled by conservative Republicans, rejected the Kansas Senate’s map. The State Senate is controlled by moderate Republicans.

Police Dogs Search for Missing Man Near Lawrence

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Lawrence police are using K-9 teams to search for a Lawrence man missing since Saturday.  Yelekal “Kal” Alemu, 23,  never made it to a family reunion in Olathe Saturday afternoon.

Police found his car in a remote area of Douglas County southeast of Lawrence.  That’s where police dogs have focused their search but detectives admit they’ve found no new clues.

Alemu graduated from Oalthe South High School and attended the University of Kansas up until December of 2011 but did not graduate. Relatives have been keeping vigil at his parents house in Olathe. His mother issued a plea.

” Please anybody who knows about Kal let us know a little hint,” said  Helen Alemu. I want him to be alive where ever he’s at. I just want to hear that he’s okay, that’s only my goal.”

Police: Theft Suspect Shoved Guitar Down Pants

OLATHE, Kan. — Police are asking for the public’s help in finding a pair of suspects wanted in connection to the unusual theft of a guitar from an Olathe music store.

According to police, two men walked into the Spencer’s Music Store at 1717 S. Mur-Len Road on the afternoon of April 12th. Police say that one of the suspects distracted a store employee while the second suspect placed a guitar down his pants. The pair then left the store.

Authorities say that the two suspects may be involved in similar thefts across the Midwest.

The first suspect is described as a black male, medium complexion, short hair and medium build, and is in his late twenties or early thirties. He was wearing blue jeans, a black and white jacket with skulls all over it, a yellow shirt with an indistinguishable print on the front, and dark tennis shoes with a white trim near the sole.

Cash-Strapped “The Jo” Faces Route Cuts

OLATHE, Kan. — Steep budget cuts could mean some big changes for Johnson County’s bus system, as at least 10 of the system’s two dozen routes could face elimination.

According to a report in the Kansas City Star, after years of expansion, a major budget shortfall could lead to drastic service reductions for The Jo.

The Jo’s fiscal year 2013 $12 million budget is down $1.5 million from fiscal year 2012, and includes cuts in federal, state and county support.

Under new plans, only five of The Jo’s nearly two dozen routes would survive, while another five – including a popular route to Lawrence – would survive “if possible.” Another 10 routes are slated for elimination entirely.

The Jo’s two services for elderly and disabled riders – Special Edition and SWIFT – would remain intact, the Star reports.

Olathe Dad Gets 10 Years for Baby’s Death

OLATHE, Kan. — Prosecutors call the January 2011 death of three-week-old Logan Snyder a clear case of Shaken Baby Syndrome.  On Monday, the baby’s father, 26-year-old Aaron Snyder was sentenced to 10-years and three months after pleading no contest to the death of his infant son.  The charge was reckless second degree murder.

Snyder’s attorney Paul Cramm says his client was innocent but decided to accept the plea deal because of his 5-year-old son Lucas.

“Aaron’s primary concern was just the risk of time away from his older boy Lucas,” Cramm said.

Snyder was facing life in prison if convicted of 1st degree murder  Under the plea deal, he could be free in seven years when his son turns 12.  It was a plea deal Snyder’s own attorney and parents told him not to take.  Defense attorney Paul Cramm says little Logan had a pre-existing brain injury from a complicated birth.
