Event Highlights the Work of Mark Twain

The Johnson County Library will host a special program entitled “Mark Twain and the Civil War” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30 at the Central Resource Library (9875 West 87th St., Overland Park).

Mark Twain expert Martin Zehr will speak on the author’s ongoing relevance in American literature and take questions about the man and his works. Zehr is a member of the Mark Twain Circle of America and has written many Twain-related articles for academic journals and made presentations at the local, national and international level.

The program is part of Library’s 2011-2012 Legacies of the Civil War series. Library programs are free and open to the public registration is required. Arboretum to Hold Christmas Lighting Events

 

 

It's a candle-lit walk like none other. Walk the adorned pathways of the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens and enjoy the festive lighting during the annual Holiday Luminary Walk.

The event is Nov. 25 and 26 and Dec. 2 and 3. It starts at 5 p.m. and concludes at 8 p.m. each scheduled day. Cost is $7 per person; children 5 and under get in free. Parking is free. You will hear festive music and see beautifully lit displays.

Exhibit Celebrates Turn-of-the-Century Christmas

 

Discover what Christmas meant to school children in rural Kansas at the turn of the 20th Century. The Lansfield School, a restored one-room schoolhouse, will be decorated for a 1904 Christmas starting Nov. 26. Join in on the festivities and make your very own Christmas ornament. The exhibit  runs through Dec. 31 from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Admission is free. The Lanesfield School Historic Site is located at 18745 S. Dillie Road in Edgerton, Kan. A first-ever Veterans Day parade with color guards, motorcycles, and vintage military vehicles, and a Veterans Day program with patriotic music, speeches, memorial wreaths, and rifle salute will highlight the 25th Annual Johnson County Veterans Day Observance in downtown Olathe on Friday, November 11.

Birdwatching Trip to Squaw Creek Scheduled Nov. 19

 

Johnson County Park and Recreation will host a fall birdwatching trip to the Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge. The 2011 day-long trip will take place on Nov. 19.  When wetland conditions are right, participants can expect to see  thousands of geese and ducks at the popular resting and feeding sanctuary for waterfowl on their migratory journey. The trip will depart from the north side of Antioch Park (6501 Antioch Road, Merriam) at 8 a.m. and return around 4 p.m. The cost for the eight-hour trip is $38 per person and includes van transportation. Preregistration is required. JoCo Veterans Day Event Will Include Olathe Parade

 

Johnson County’s 25th Veterans Day Observance Anniversary will spill out into the streets of downtown Olathe on Friday, November 11.

The public event will celebrate the silver anniversary of the county-sponsored Veterans Day observance and honor the 7-158th Aviation Regiment at the New Century AirCenter near Gardner. The unit lost three soldiers – Specialist  Spencer Duncan, a 2008 Olathe South High School graduate; Specialist Alexander Bennett, Overland Park; and Chief Warrant Officer Brian Nichols, Kansas City – on August 6 when their helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan, killing 23 Americans and seven Afghanistan servicemen.

JoCo Library to Host Entrepreneurial Event Nov. 17

Are you a local small business owner or beginning entrepreneur? Did you know there are government and nonprofit agencies available to help businesses start and grow for little or no cost? The Johnson County Library's annual GovFest brings these agencies together, providing easy access for the beginning entrepreneur or the small business seeking help to grow. Representatives from local agencies will attend this year's event to staff an exhibit hall and deliver targeted programs.

The event will be Nov. 17 from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Central Resource Library.
