JoCo Grants 10 Green Business Awards

To recognize new, as well as ongoing efforts by Johnson County businesses to “go green,” the Johnson County Solid Waste Management Committee has selected ten recipients of its annual Green Business Award. 

The ten recipients diverted a combined total of 1,227 tons of waste from landfills to recycling and composting. Awardees include manufacturers and a hospital.  The 2011 recipients of the top Emerald Award are:

Olathe Offers Tree Recycling Options

Olathe residents have two options when it comes to tree recycling. Residents can recycle cut trees by placing them at the curb on their regular trash collection day or trees can also be taken to the City of Olathe Composting Facility.  It's located near 127th Street and Hedge Lane.

The composting facility is open between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. it will be closed on Saturday, December 25 and Saturday, January 1.

The Parks and Recreation Department will place some of the collected trees in City ponds and lakes for fish habitat. The remaining trees will be ground into mulch for residents to pick up free of charge. For more information, call (913) 971-9311.

Olathe Company Fined for Selling Misbranded, Repackaged Pesticide for Dogs

A pet supply retailer based in Olathe, Kan., has agreed to pay a $3,400 fine for selling misbranded, repackaged pesticide for dogs. Petspace LLC allegedly sold a quantity of Frontline Plys for Dogs throun an eBay online auction.

The EPA alleges that the company's sale of the pesticide was in violation of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act  because the product had been removed from its original packaging and labeling, and was repackaged by Petspace LLC with incomplete and improper labeling. Ernie Miller Nature Center Celebrates 25 Years with Birthday Bash

The Ernie Miller Nature Center is holding a free birthday bash to celebrate its silver anniversary on September 18.  The nature center is located at 909 N. Kansas, 7 Highway in Olathe.

There will be birthday cake and craft stations, as well as stories and other events.  The Ernie Miller Nature Center opened in the fall of 1985 as Johnson County's first nature center.
