Public Asked to Help Find Playground Arsonists

Police have not yet found the people responsible for setting fire to three school playgrounds in Johnson County, Kan.

Similar incidents of playground vandalism have occurred in Overland Park, Lenexa, Olathe, and Shawnee.

The Shawnee Police Department is asking members of the community who drive by or live near any playground to be alert and report any suspicious people, vehicles or behavior.

The first reported incident was in June in Shawnee, Kan.  Since then, three other playgrounds were set on fire, two in Overland Park at Morse Elementary and Cedar Hills Elementary, and one in Olathe at Liberty View Elementary School.

Man Who Used Child As Shield Against Taser has Court Date

The next court date is set for an Olathe man accused of using his three-year-old as a human shield against deputies. Johnson County deputies accidentally Tasered the child.

Jason Troxel will be back in court March 9. He's charged with child endangerment and other related charges.
    
Prosecutors say deputies were trying to serve a protection order and remove the child from Troxel's custody, when he fled.  The child was treated for minor injuries.

District To Hold Meeting After School Burglarized, Set On Fire

Parents of students who attend Green Springs Elementary are invited to a meeting on Saturday to discuss the district's plans after the school was burglarized and set on fire this week.

The meeting is Saturday at 9 a.m. at Frontier Trail Middle School, 15300 W. 143rd Street.  The district will share information for Monday and those that cannot attend will be notified by phone or email, or they can find the information on the school's website.

Johnson County Couple Tricked by Sheriff's Office Impostor

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a scam that happened in Gardner.  

The Johnson County Sheriff's Facebook page explains that a person called a Gardner couple and said he was a civil processor with the sheriff's office.  The caller told the couple that they needed to send $1,800 to a website by 5 p.m. or they would be arrested.

"The Sheriff's Office does not take money in this fashion for civil issues," they said in their Facebook posting.

Federal Money to Fund New Crime Lab in Johnson County

OLATHE, KAN. - Johnson County was awarded a $21 million contract to build a new criminalistics lab for the sheriff's office. The lab will serve all Johnson County Police Departments as well as the Sheriff's Office. For more information on the project go to fox4kc.com.

New Mental Health Program Funded in Johnson County

The Johnson County Jail is trying to reduce its jail population without putting dangerous people back out on the street. A Gardner daycare provider who pleaded "no contest" to child abuse charges as part of a plea agreement received a stunning surprise from a visiting judge, who gave the woman over two-and-a-half years in prison instead of the 30 days and probation she and her attorney's agreed to.
